When To Replace Or Repair
Okay first lets talk about when cracked windshield repair is appropriate. There are some companies who do only repair. For them this simply means what are the best materials, equipment and procedures. They do not offer windshield replacement as a service. An honest technician working for a company like this will still tell you that the windshield damage is too severe to repair even though it means he loses the work. The temptation for company's like this is to attempt to repair windshields that should be replaced rather than repaired. An honest company who cares about their reputation will not do this because they want their customers to be happy. If the windshield crack repair spreads later on, or if the crack is still visible enough to impair vision, the customer will not be happy with the workmanship. Let's face it cracked windshields should be replaced when they the damage is too severe.
On the other hands the temptation for unscrupulous windshield crack repair companies who do offer replacement is to "upsell" the customer into a replacement when the windshield really could be repaired. There is more profit in a replacement than their is in a repair in most cases.
An honest technician will not make his judgement based on how much money it makes him, but what is the right thing to do for the client. Part of knowing how to repair a cracked windshield is know when it really should be replaced. No company or person is perfect. But at Granite Auto Glass we our policy is to be honest and do what is in the best interest of the client. We offer both services and we train and emphasize with our technicians to do this honestly.
Repairing A Cracked Windshield
Okay now that we know when to repair and when to replace, lets talk about how to repair. Their are different brands of hardware or equipment you can buy. And each have their own pro's and cons. I feel like it boils down mostly to the personal preference of the technician. As long as it is decent quality, whatever works best for you is best.
Drilling A Hole In The Damaged Area
The first step is drilling into the windshield into the center of the area where the rock struck the windshield. We are going to pump a glue or resin into the chip and crack to literally fill up the air space and hold the glass together so the crack does not spread any further. It is important to drill far enough to get into the main part of the crack, but not so far that you drill into the plastic laminate of the windshield.
Injecting The Resin
The process of injecting the resin is the most important part of the process. You need to inject enough in to fill up the entire damaged area, but not too much. You are trying to push out all the air and fill all of that space with resin. This part goes pretty quick. This is the part too when you know if you made the right call or not on deciding on repair instead of replacement. If the crack has been there for too long, dirt and moisture may have gotten into the crack. This makes it so that the resin will not adhere to the damaged glass area properly. Moisture and dirt also make it so that the crack is still visible even after the repair attempt is made. If it is too bad it still may be a line of vision impairment. Cracked Windshields not prepared properly are still cracked. And in simple terms that is how to repair a cracked windshield.
